What is Moon-buggy race?
NASA
organizes the great Moon-buggy race in Huntsville, Alabama, at the U.S. Space
& Rocket Center every year.
Description-
The NASA Great Moonbuggy challenge 2013 is the
20th instalment in the series of annual Moonbuggy competition. The
event will be held in the month of April, 2013 at the Marshall Space Centre,
Huntsville, Alabama, U.S.A. The event is the largest of its kind international
competition at high school and college (undergraduate) level. The event
witnesses around eighty teams from around the globe competing against each other
for the title of the best.
The Challenge-
A team of six members are given the task to
design and fabricate a two seater, human powered vehicle that will be used to
traverse an obstacle course of half a mile, simulated in the image of the lunar
surface. The vehicle must be collapsible to fit inside a cube of size four
feet, and in this state must be carried by the drivers up to a distance of
twenty feet. The vehicle is supposed to be driven by a male and a female
candidate.
The Prizes-
Apart from the
awards for the top three winning teams there are a host of other awards that
include –
- Feather-weight Award- For the lightest vehicle.
- Most Improved- For the best improvements made in the design.
- Rookie Award- For the best performing new entry.
- Best Report- For the team with the best design Report.
- System Safety- For the vehicle with the best safety standards.
- Design Award- For the best approach towards designing a vehicle for traversing on lunar surface

TEAM DAKSH II
About our team
· Our Moonbuggy design consists of its
suspension system, chassis, drive trains, steering mechanism, brake
system, recumbent seat assembly, tires and the wheel assembly.
·
Each part will be designed and assembled to allow
the vehicle to withstand the engineering challenges posed by the rough lunar
terrain and to meet the requirements of high strength, rigidity and good
dynamic performance.
·
The vehicle will boast an ultra-lightweight
foldable design in order to minimize the payload on the space missions it may
be carried on. The moonbuggy will be a human-powered all-terrain vehicle with
the capability to become a hybrid at a later stage.
·
Our team consists of six student members under the
guidance of one faculty advisor .The team is subdivided into three groups: Suspension
& Steering, Chassis & Bodywork and Marketing & Finance.
·
The team members are responsible for the design,
fabrication and testing of the vehicle.
·
Two members will drive the vehicle over the rough
course designed to simulate the lunar terrain
·
All members will ensure that the vehicle meets all
the required safety criterion
·
The 6-membered team along with the faculty advisor
will travel to the NASA US Space and Rocket Center to take part in the race to be
held on the 25th April, 2013.

Our Aspirations
TEAM DAKSH II, just
like any other racing team has the ultimate goal of winning. With this main
objective in mind, our team narrows its focus to a group of supporting goals
which serve as guidelines for the team’s functioning and development. Our
primary objectives are as follows:
v Student Development – NASA moonbuggy competition enables students to gain hands-on
experience. The real world management, leadership, and design skills learned
through these competitions cannot be equalled in the classroom.
v Visibility/Partnerships - As well as
providing a two-way relationship between students and alumni/industry
professionals, we extend our network to promote sponsor visibility. Without
support from businesses, civic organizations and individuals, our team would
not be able to compete annually in NASA MOONBUGGY RACE. Therefore we feel it is
our responsibility to make GEI TEAM DAKSH valuable to sponsors by maintaining
strong relationships with them and integrating
sponsor visibility into our team’s foundation.
PREVIOUS VENTURES
The team
has a rich experience in working on
major national and international level projects:
NASA GREAT MOONBUGGY RACE 2012: Team of 6 members participated in the 19th
moonbuggy race. The team performed well. The team’s moonbuggy was selected
among the 4 top moonbuggies to be given a place in the NASA museum.
SAEINDIA
BAJA 2011: The task involves the design, fabrication and
racing of a single seated all-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), held at Pithampura, Indore. The team secured and All India Rank of 74
out of the 200 shortlisted & participating team.
SAENIS EFFICYCLE 2011: The task involved designing, fabrication and racing of a two seated, human powered, hybrid vehicle capable of running on electric power, held at Chandigarh. The team secured Rank 4 in the endurance run and an AIR 26.
